The Blind Side

The Blind Side was based on a book written by Michael Lewis entitled “The Blind Side:  Evolution of a Game”

Director:  John Lee Hancock

Date produced:  2009

Genre:  Drama

The movie, The Blind Side, touched b heart because it was based on a true story that allowed the audience to see the heart of a wealthy Caucasian woman who saw a need and acted on her instinct.   Unlike the rainy nighttime scene in the movie, The Blind Side true story reveals that Leigh Anne’s encounter with Michael on the side of the road really happened on a cold morning during Thanksgiving break. She and her husband watched Michael get off a city bus in the snow wearing only cutoff blue jeans and a t-shirt. She saw an African American young boy who needed someone to care for him.

Quintan Aaron  who played the role of Michael Oher was a impersonator because he did not actually put himself in the part although he did okay to get the message to the viewer.  His look when he received his own bed was a tear jerker. He was a humble looking young man who touched the heart of many as the actor playing Michael.

Did Michael Oher really never have his own bed prior to living with the Tuohy family?

Yes. Being one of twelve children growing up in the projects, the real Michael Oher never had his own bed. Like Sandra Bullock’s character does in the movie, Leigh Anne bought him a futon to sleep on since her husband told her that the larger pro athletes use them if they can’t find a bed big enough. –NYTimes.com

Jae Head who played S. J. Touhys did an awesome job as this intelligent kid who did not see color and was very mature for his age and cunning.  He encouraged Michael to press on and be determined when he was helping him train in football. The personality actor was made for him in this movie.

Sandra Bullock who had the leading role and expressed it magnificently as Mrs. Leigh Anne Touhys who took Michael in and helped him to reach for the stars and accomplish a goal in life.  The scene when she picked Michael up after he walked off showed the mother image and her love for him as if he was her  natural son.  She brought realism to the movie using her personality and her character she exemplified.  Sandra Bullock always put herself in her roles and she is a phenomenal actress.

The music was phenomenal and intriguing! It captured your attention with how it enhanced the movement in the scene with the animals exhibiting excitement and great joy. The sound of the music captured the attention of a range of people from young to old and sparked an interest to see what was associated with it.

Although the talking and placing it correctly with the scenes was not easy because you were not on the screen being filmed, but visualizing yourself in the scene. The film being animated is a challenge because the movement with sound have to be on point.Characters talking to one another in films, known as dialogue, is now so much a part of the movie experience that audiences take it for granted (Goodykoontz, B. & Jacobs, C. P., 2014 sec 8.4 par 2).

The sound effects causes emotions to heighten such as fear and crying in the movie. It also caused you to think that the characters in the scene can hear what you are saying. Your heart raced when the sound effects were used at the appropriate moment because anticipation of what is going to happen and then nothing as the sound becomes calm to keep you on alert. The sound and effects helps to create what the story is about and how it is seen by the audience.

If the sound effect was removed from “The Lion King”, it would not capture the heart of the young people because they associate sound with animation. Effective editing can effortlessly manipulate time and space, but what really holds a viewer’s attention is the way it manipulates rhythm and pacing throughout a film (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014 sec 7.4 par 20).

Miracle on 34th Street

Title : Miracle on 34th Street

Year :1947

Genre : Fantasy, Drama, Comedy, Kids and Family

Plot summary :

Christmas is approaching and the idea of believing in Santa Claus was insane for a woman named Doris and her daughter, Susan.  Kris Kringle encourages them to believe and have faith during this season.

Actors: Edmund Gwenn, Maureen O’Hara, John Payne, Gene Lockhart, Natalie Wood

Directors: George Seaton

The captivating movie that had the attention of many using three-point lighting effect which set the mood in the film.  The black and white film had several scenes that use effective framing which kept the feeling of Christmas.  The angle of the camera in the framing of the mise en scène had you focusing on the main characters and the lighting was used to display the drama part of the story.  The audience seeing the main characters  helped to give imagination of how this white beard man name Kris Kringle would convince Doris and her daughter, Susan, that he was Santa Claus. Although many believed, Kris wanted to help the ones that did not and see in their heart for the disbelief.  The authenticity was displayed in the part of Santa Claus because he did not look like a person who was dressed up as a man with a fake beard.

Using a high-key lighting in the movie would not capture the mood of the characters especially the ones who did not believe in the beginning.
